Reckonings

Reckonings is a series of images that are made by photographing freshly made paintings. Capturing the instant before the paint transforms from a wet, pliable substance to a fixed one is  essential to these works. It suspends the medium in a state of flux and preserves an image of the way paint appears in its most vulnerable state, allowing me to share an intimate, ephemeral moment in the life of a painting that few viewers experience. By moving in close, I am able to capture small, gestural strokes in monumental ways.

I am interested in the idea of paint as a transitional method, which stands in contrast to the typical painter's thought process. After the photographs are made, the paintings are discarded or used as a pallet for subsequent works.
